I am Mitrobinda Ghosh, the founder, secretary, and project director of Tollygunge Ramdhanu Social Welfare Society. Let me tell you the story of how it all began.
It was a rainy afternoon during the pandemic when I first met the street children. They had lost all hope and were struggling to arrange even two square meals a day. I gave them colours and papers and they created rainbows out of the darkness and pain. That’s how Ramdhanu was born.
I had known them for years, but during the darkest phase of our lives, I felt the need to educate them. We started with just four children, sitting on a mat on the pavement and painting together. My then nine-year-old daughter always accompanied me, and we taught them basic mathematics and literature. They taught me to be patient and compassionate, and it was always a both-way learning situation.
When the pandemic was over, we put all of them in school, and by then, we had 24 street children and three volunteers who are still an essential part of our organization. We started taking care of all their needs, from school fees to health checkups, from nutrition to basic hygiene.
While educating and empowering these children is our most important project, we have also broadened our horizons. We started a project called ‘Beyond Boundaries,’ where we visit remote places to educate destitute children and distribute food. We work with the tribal children of Murgaboni, Birbhum, on a regular basis, and there is another project called ‘Ray of Hope’ where we work and take care of blind children. Whenever possible, we distribute food, clothes, and blankets to street people.
None of this would have been possible without so many well-wishers who are always there to support us. We dare to dream big only because of their unconditional love.
I would like to thank my team members for their efforts, dedication, meticulous planning, and, especially, for approving all my weird ideas and thoughts. Our Ramdhanu is just a toddler now, and we have miles to go, but we firmly believe that if we can bring positive change in a single child’s life, we will consider ourselves successful.

In addition, we advocate for the rights and needs of underprivileged communities, raising awareness and building support to create a better world for all.
